Water Museum of Bavaria "Haus am Strom"

Untergriesbach, Germany

Since 2000, the environmental station Haus am Strom has been located in the Danube valley. The buildings are shaped like a wave and a pebble.

Our exhibition has four important contents:

  1. Biodiversity in the Danube Valley
  2. The power of Water
  3. Men and Danube – Sustainability
  4. Water

The pebble stone building is our event space. People can watch water dancing to music, choose between several films and look at changing temporal exhibitions.

In the exhibition, visitors experience the impressing nature of the Danube valley, the power of water, life in and at the river in a joyous and easy way. The exhibition combines activity and entertainment and also offers silent places. It is accessible for people with disabilities and we provide audio guides in English, Dutch and German. The exhibition tries to sensitize the visitors to the issues of water, energy and biodiversity. It shows different opportunities and encourages a wise and thrifty usage of water. It wants to foster the appreciation of natural resources and the nature reserve. It promotes the understanding and acceptance of the people affected by the constraints.

About 12 000 people take part in our activities during one year. 10 % are between 1 and 5 years, 40% are between 6 and 13 years, 10% are between 14 and 17 years, 20% are between 18 and 65 years, 10% are over 65 years old.

Research Activities

– Decrease of Open Spaces in Forests and the Effects on the Population of Wild Bees and the Pollination of Campanula-species.

– Grundlagen zum Erhalt und zur Entwicklung der Sterletpopulation in der österreichischen Donau (Basics for the preservation and the development of the population of sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) in the German and Austrian Danube).

Itineraries

Treasure Hunt danube valley

Adventure Trail “Treasure hunt in the Danube Valley”

Why do we need nature? This is the underlying question of this trail. The interactive trail is fun. While getting active at the different stops, the rambler learns a lot about hydroenergy, fishes, boats, drinking water and a lot of other topics. Many artists performed their work at some of the stations. After 18 stops and a 3,5 km walk, a little treasure awaits the participant, if the hunter has filled out a crossword puzzle.
